Doctors, What To Consider When Choosing

AHA Recommendation

We don't provide referrals to physicians, cardiac surgeons, nurses, physician's assistants, nutritionists, physical therapists or occupational therapists. However, we offer these suggestions to help you consider options.

Where can I find names of qualified doctors?
  • Ask your family, friends, other doctors or your local medical society for recommendations. Then find out more about those recommended.
  • Ask the doctors' offices whether they're covered by your medical insurance plan. You can also ask for a list of approved doctors from your insurance company or your employer's health plan administrator.
  • Check the doctors' credentials in the American Medical Directory, the AMA Doctor Finder, or other professional directory at your local library. Board-certified doctors have completed specific training in their fields and passed required tests.
  • Find out where the doctors' offices are located and with what hospitals they're affiliated.
  • If you need to be treated for a specific condition, find out how much experience each recommended doctor has with it.  Ask the doctor or the doctor's office how many people he or she has treated with your condition.
What should I consider after meeting with a doctor?
  • How confident and comfortable did you feel with the doctor?
  • Did the doctor listen to your concerns and answer your questions in a way you can understand?
  • Did the doctor explain your medical situation and describe your treatment options in a way you can understand?

Your relationship with a doctor is long term. Be aware that good communication is a two-way process. It may take several visits to develop a good rapport.
